Generally, lessors (and retailers) of products may be held responsible in negligence, just like manufacturers and distributors. Indeed generally the law requires anyone in the chain of distribution of a product to make sure that it is safe. Similar considerations also apply to assemblers of products who are held responsible for all of the various component parts which are incorporated into its products.
